Cooking with Soph: Back to My Roots ft. Char Siu Bao

Tell me, what dish reminds you of home?

This is a char siu bao, a Cantonese barbecue pork bun. Char siu bao is one of those dishes that I grew up with but have never made myself. My grandmother didn’t get the chance to learn how to cook the food from her heritage so growing up, my mother didn’t make it and neither did I. The more I see Asian faces on social media cooking these same dishes that I know from my childhood, has me wanting to learn to cook my food more and more! (Sending lots of love to Asian food creators)❣️

So for the first time, I made a char siu bao. For the first time, I made this fluffy dough from scratch, cooked the sauce and the filling, rolled the dough, and learned to pinch the edges together to make a little bao! 👏 It looked far from the ones you’ll see at dim sum (which is why you’re seeing the cross-section instead hehe) but I had a lot of fun preparing these and the final taste was perfect! I am so proud of these dishes and where they come from, and opening up this blog has only brought me more appreciation for this food. ❤️

P.S. I’ve been having a lot of fun with cooking recently so look forward to more! Hope you enjoyed this little change of pace. 😌
